Chester County Bridge Tours

Page 2

Leaving Kimberton in a northwesternly direction on Pughtown Road provides two crossings of French Creek, a pristine trout stream.  The second (covered) bridge is known as Shedder- Hall (1850), another photo-op stop for about six cars.

There are several great driving routes from here to the quaint village of Yellow Springs.  If you digested the history of Revolutionary War skirmishes fought in September 1777, (refer to the end of our website’s January Encounter update for link to): www.ushistory.org/valleyforge/history/ index.html  you’ll recognize this loop is traverses the last region British Gen’l Howe’s troops engaged the Continentals before taking Philadelphia & Germantown.

Besides the Yellow Springs Inn ( circa  1710) there is an
outdoor pottery kilns surrounded by a collection of animal sculptures, and an indoor art gallery.  This is a popular venue for weddings. It was the center for local professional and amateur theater in the 1970’s until attendance became overwhelming for the converted barn. People’s Light & Theater is now thriving at the intersection of Rts 30 & 401, approximately 12 miles away (just west of Malvern).

Rt 113 can be taken north back to VFNHP or south to pick up Chester County’s Southern covered bridge loop.  The first covered bridge, Gibson’s Harmony Hill(1872) crosses the east branch of the Brandywine Creek just south of Downingtown. It was from here that the British marched to Yellow Springs on Sept 17, 1777.

Across from the bridge, taking Shadyside  then Marshalton-Thorndale roads southward  lands you in Marshalton,  an antiquer’s paradise complete with a gourmet inn, pub, blacksmith shop, but no gas station within 25 miles.

A ten +/- mile swing south to Northbrook passes several horse-breeding ranches, crosses the main Brandywine Creek.  The restored Brandywine railroad stops at this popular canoe/raft rental depot.
