Yes…it is that time of year to think warm thoughts and, of course, think of getting together with old Healey friends. Healey driving weather is just around the corner. What am I driving at? Thoughts of everyone’s favorite weekend of the year…Encounter weekend…something I know you have been thinking about since last August!
This year’s Encounter weekend is the 30th such Healey orgy…that’s amazing! New Jersey is the responsible group this year with the assistance of Long Island, so I am here to grovel and so passionate is my plea, that I anticipate you all sending in your registration forms and calling the Hilton by the time you read this. You know you are going…you always do, so why make us organizers squirm?
The location for ENCOUNTER 30, is the magnificent Parsippany Hilton Hotel and Convention Center nestled in the scenic hills of Morris County, New Jersey. (about 5 miles from Moss Motors). Although it is situated in close proximity to some beautiful areas and roads, The Hilton is conveniently located just 5 minutes off of I-80 and I-287 and about 30 minutes north of I-78.
To help us celebrate the 30th anniversary of this great “family reunion”, we have invited Gerry and Marian Coker and Jack Bough. For those of you who may be new to Healeys or who may just be out of touch, Gerry is the reason we are all here to celebrate this great car. It is Gerry, who came up with the design of the car we all love and cherish. Indeed, outside of Donald Healey, he is probably the most important person when it comes to these cars. Our other guest is none other than Jack Bough, the man behind Lucas and who represented that company for decades. Jack always has some great stories and indeed, was at the Bonneville Salt Flats with Donald and Geoff Healey, Carroll Shelby and others for those infamous speed trials back in the 50s. Jack will be bringing along a very special video which was presented to him by Geoff Healey. This was only given to those who were at the Salt Flats. He will show this during ENCOUNTER and then graciously donate a copy for our charity auction.
The event will begin on Thursday, August 9th with a departure date of Sunday, August 12th and feature an array of the usual events, plus some surprises. Whether you enjoy rallying, autocrossing, racing your valve cover, showing your car, or just plain socializing, this is the event for you. We will also have the traditional events such as a funkhana, kiddiekhana, arts, crafts and photo competition, assorted tech sessions, Chinese auction/tricky tray, regalia sales, flea market and probably the finest thing we do annually, our charity auction.
This year’s designated charity is Multiple Sclerosis and the event will be held Friday evening. Besides the great video to be donated by Jack Bough as mentioned above, we have procured a number of items from Castrol including a very nice golf putter, cigar humidor, autographed racing memorabilia and more. I also got a great autograph from Barbara Walters at a convention I attended in Las Vegas. It is an early advertisement from the 50s featuring a blue Healey 100 with none other than Barbara at the wheel. She was most kind in autographing a copy which I will have framed for the auction. Did you know that she has never had a driver’s license? We will also be auctioning off a number of hotel night stays from various area hotels. This event is truly one of the greatest things that AHSTC does that really makes us shine! We need a lot more great items to auction off. Please be generous and donate something. It doesn’t have to be Healey related. We all have some memorabilia or extra parts sitting around collecting dust, which would be great to donate to this event. Just bring your items with you to the regalia room at ENCOUNTER and let the person working there know that you have an item for the charity auction.
We are also looking for sponsors and merchandise for our raffle and for our registration packages. If you, your company, or anyone else you know would like to be a sponsor of our event either financially or through the donation of merchandise, please let me know and I will send out a very nice letter explaining our event and how one can get involved in this. All I need is a contact name, mailing or e-mail address, and the rest, as they say, is history.
I will tell you that the Hilton has somewhat limited rooms available to us at the extremely special rate of $89, so I suggest you call them immediately and reserve your rooms. Heck, if the world comes to an end, you can always cancel! So get off your duff, send in your registration, and book your rooms NOW! Hope to see all of your registrations very soon. BE THERE OR BE SQUARE!!!!!
